Set in 1976, Hound Dog follows Billy “the Hound Dog” Brower and Jim “the Rottweiler” Rothstein, two Vietnam Veterans turned professional wrestlers, as they struggle to adjust to civilian life in the dark underbelly of pro wrestling. This is not only a professional wrestling film, it is a post-Vietnam, Elvis-inspired, noir thriller that provides a glimpse into the underbelly of 1970s territory wrestling. The film is inspired by the story of Bruiser Brody, a famous wrestler of the 1970s and 80s who was murdered by a disgruntled opponent. While the particular events of Hound Dog did not transpire, they could have.
My father grew up watching Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan, and the Ultimate Warrior in the 1980s, but we never watched wrestling together until the documentary series Dark Side of the Ring. It was not until watching this series and learning about the goings-on behind the kayfabe that I found my appreciation for the unique form of entertainment that is professional wrestling. From this, Hound Dog was written. I wrote it for my father and all the wrestling fans just like him. I wrote it for America’s Veterans and the trauma so many have endured. I wrote it for Elvis fans who hate the Colonel as much as I do. I wrote it because I felt Billy Brower’s story deep in my soul, clawing to get out.
